How much bedding do you need?

Restful sleep with good bedding

The quality of our sleep depends not only on the right mattress and a soft pillow, but also on the bedding we use. Whether elegant, cozy, or floral: the selection of bedding is huge—but how much bedding do you actually need? In this article, we look at why there is no single correct answer to this question and what determines how many bedding sets you should have.

What influences the required number of bedding sets?

A particularly important factor for the number of bedding sets needed is the number of beds. You should distinguish between beds that are used regularly and those that are only occasionally used as guest beds.

Important factors for the right number of bedding sets are:

  • Household size: How many beds are used regularly?
  • Seasons: Do you need different materials depending on the season?
  • Personal preferences: Do you need variety or do you prefer consistency?
  • Special situations: Are there children who are still potty training? Do you often have overnight guests?

How much bedding you really need

As a rule, 2–3 bedding sets per bed are sufficient. One set is in use, one is being washed or stored, and you may have a third set in reserve—for example, if you need to change bedding more frequently due to heavy sweating or illness.

You can also have one set for summer, one for winter, and a change set for all seasons. This applies not only to duvet and pillow covers, but also to fitted sheets. You should always have spare sheets available as well.

For guest beds, one bedding set per bed is usually sufficient.

If you feel like you have too much bedding stored, we’ve collected some tips in this article on how to upcycle or sensibly declutter old bedding.

Using bedding for a long time: proper care

To ensure you enjoy your bedding for a long time, always follow the care instructions on the product. The care label tells you the ideal washing temperature and whether the bedding can be tumble dried.

When buying, make sure to choose high-quality materials so your bedding lasts beyond just one season. The craftsmanship is also important—check, for example, the seams.

Additional bedding items: sleep more comfortably

The bed is usually only used at night. During the day, you can still create a cozy atmosphere by using a bedspread or decorative cushions. This is especially useful for guest beds to keep them protected from dust when not in use.

Consider your own needs

Ultimately, the amount of bedding you need depends on your personal preferences and habits. If you don’t have a way to dry freshly washed bedding quickly, you may need two sets for each season so that one can be in use while the other is being washed. If you tend to feel too hot or too cold, you may need different materials depending on the temperature. Allergies or other special needs can also affect how much bedding you should keep in stock.

Take these guidelines as a suggestion and decide for yourself how much bedding you really need. One thing is certain: with high-quality bedding, you can enjoy restful sleep for a long time and avoid frequent replacements.
