Our attractive MÖVE Kimonos are manufactured in Germany, Made in Germany - according to the highest German standards. The in-house production including logistics is located in Großschönau (Saxony), a place with a long-standing tradition, where even during the Baroque period European princes had precious damasks woven. In 1856, the first terry weaving loom in Germany was put into operation in Großschönau, establishing an important centre for terry production.
Today, MÖVE operates 30 Jacquard looms producing materials for Kimonos and other high-quality terry products. Unique in the industry: MÖVE employs 240 staff and has a fully integrated production process, meaning that everything from warp preparation, weaving, and dyeing to finishing is carried out in-house. Sustainability and environmental protection are given equal importance alongside modern production, the quality of our Kimonos, and the expertise of our employees.
Where does the term Kimono come from and what defines a Kimono?
The word Kimono comes from Japanese and roughly means "thing to wear". It is a traditional kaftan-like garment held together by a wide belt (Obi). The basic shape resembles a T, and the length usually reaches the ankles. Today in Japan, Kimonos are mostly worn by women, primarily on formal occasions. Over time, a variety of styles, colours, and fabrics have evolved.
For the terry Kimono as we know it today, the cut has been adapted to modern needs. This means the elaborate tying process is eliminated, and the Kimono is instead soft and comfortable. However, characteristic features remain, such as the typical collar and the belt for tying – although the belt on a bathrobe Kimono is noticeably narrower.
What are MÖVE Kimonos made of and how should they be cared for?
Our MÖVE Kimonos are made from the finest yarns with great attention to detail. In most cases, they consist of 100% premium cotton, which – due to its special properties – is particularly suitable for our Kimonos: absorbent, soft & easy to care for. Cotton can be processed differently, resulting in the following qualities:
- Terry – the classic material with familiar loops on the front and back
- Piqué – a lightly structured fabric without loops, ideal for summer and quick drying
In general, our Kimonos are easy to care for and can usually be machine washed at 40°C or 60°C. Gentle tumble drying is usually also possible. To enjoy your Kimono for a long time, please always follow the care instructions.

For those who love extra coziness, our unisex Kimonos from the MÖVE LOFT collection are ideal. They are made from 100% cotton terry and are extra soft and comfortable due to the special Airspin yarn. With a length of 120 cm, they are perfect for every season.
For travellers – or for the warmer months – we offer our MÖVE HOMEWEAR Kimonos. They are made from airy-light cotton piqué, which absorbs moisture well and dries quickly. The simple cut and selection of colours make them perfect for both women and men.
The unisex MÖVE WELLBEING Kimono impresses with its particularly resource-friendly production and sustainable materials – organic cotton and European linen. The striking piping details on the collar and pockets are also eye-catching.
The men’s Kimono from the MÖVE GRAPHIC collection stands out with its bold block stripe pattern outside and the narrow stripes inside. Practical pockets and a relaxed tie belt ensure comfort.
