Weight specifications for towels explained simply
What weight levels are there?
The higher the specified grammage (weight per square meter), the thicker and heavier a towel is. Towels are usually divided into four different quality levels:
• Light quality: between 380 and 449 g/m²
• Medium quality: between 450 and 499 g/m²
• Heavy quality: between 500 and 600 g/m²
• Luxury quality: more than 600 g/m²
These classifications may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer. This list gives you a guideline of what weight to expect when referring to “medium” or “high” quality.
Are surface weight and quality the same?
The weight of a towel does not necessarily determine its quality. In this context, “quality” in relation to towel weight refers more to a characteristic rather than the actual material quality or workmanship. However, it is clear that very light towels are thinner and therefore usually less robust.
Lightweight towels & their advantages
Lightweight towels, such as those in the PIQUÉE and SUMMER PIQUÉE collections, are thinner and lighter than most other towels. Thanks to their special honeycomb structure without loops, these towels are still highly absorbent, easy to care for, and durable.
Lightweight towels are generally easier to fold and save space, making them perfect for travel. If a towel has loops, you should ensure that even at a very light weight it is truly durable: in some cases, instead of terry cloth, only a type of looped fabric is used—a small but important difference that affects quality. Loop fabric is made from a special yarn and can therefore deform or wear out more quickly.
When is a towel with a high surface weight suitable?
Luxury towels, with more than 600 g/m², are often particularly dense and fluffy and can be quite heavy depending on their size. Our silky-soft BAMBOO LUXE collection, at 630 g/m², is especially refined and exudes pure luxury. The special material blend creates a beautiful sheen and a velvety-soft feel. The BROOKLYN collection also conveys elegance and luxury at 600 g/m². Those who love something special and want to give their bathroom a touch of style and elegance will find these two series ideal.
However, these collections are only partially suitable for travel, and you should ensure a sturdy drying setup when hanging them.
Which towel weight is optimal?
We have seen that both very light and very heavy towels have their place. Most of our collection falls into the heavy category, between 500 and 550 g/m². These towels are soft, fluffy, and cozy, while still not being excessively heavy even in larger sizes. Their excellent drying properties ensure that they are quickly ready for use again.
The ideal towel weight depends primarily on its intended use. However, an everyday towel should have a medium to heavy quality so that you can enjoy it for a long time.
