Narrow towels: what they are suitable for

What are narrow towels?

If you are looking for a narrow towel, you usually want one that is no more than 50 cm wide—or a towel that is relatively long in proportion to its width.

The following towel types fall into this category:

• Guest towels (30 cm wide)
• Hand towels (50 cm wide)
• Sauna towels (80 cm wide with a length of 200 cm)

If the proportions are less important to you, washcloths (typically 30 × 30 cm) could also be considered narrow towels, even though they are technically square.

Narrow and short terry products are particularly space-saving and can be folded compactly. This applies less to large sauna towels, as they are ideally also wonderfully fluffy.

Using narrow towels

Narrow towels have a variety of uses. Since they are usually rather small, they are perfect as small towels in the bathroom or guest bathroom (hence the name “guest towel”). Their compact size allows you to fold (or roll) them neatly and stack them next to the sink, for example in a basket or on a shelf. This way, your guests can take a fresh towel whenever needed.

Standard towels sized 50 × 100 cm are also great for on the go, such as during sports or at the gym. Sauna towels, on the other hand, are ideal for lying down comfortably in the sauna.

In addition to large or small narrow towels, there are also so-called “towel scarves”: very long towels with a relatively narrow width, often used at the gym. However, standard 50 × 100 cm towels are also suitable for this purpose.

Material & care

When choosing towels, you should always ensure you buy high-quality products. Terry cloth is preferable to regular fleece, as its loops are created through weaving. Depending on the weave, terry towels can be either more textured or fluffy and soft—but in any case, they are more durable than fleece products, which can develop holes or pulled threads more quickly.

Whether you prefer pure cotton or a blend for your narrow towels is up to you. Different materials vary in absorbency, drying time, and texture. Depending on the intended use and your personal preferences, different guest towels or hand towels may suit you better.
