Small bathrooms: both a challenge and an opportunity

A small bathroom is not uncommon, particularly in older properties. Small bathrooms can be almost square in layout, or long and narrow. Whether measuring just 3 to 5 m², they all share the same challenge: furnishing and using the space effectively is significantly more difficult than in bathrooms of 10 m² or more.

The challenge lies in positioning sanitary fittings intelligently while choosing furniture that provides ample storage without blocking features such as windows. However, small bathrooms also offer the opportunity to embrace minimalism and focus on what truly matters—often at a more affordable cost.

Visually enlarging small spaces

A small bathroom can often feel dark and cramped—especially if there is no window. Light colours and large tiles can help make the space appear brighter and more spacious than it actually is. Light can be reflected through well-placed lamps and mirrors, making even an internal bathroom feel bright and inviting.

Contrasting colours or mosaic accents can also be used in small bathrooms—after all, a personal touch should not be missing. However, these should be used sparingly and thoughtfully to avoid making the space feel too busy.

A small bathroom does not mean everything has to be small. A larger washbasin—if space allows—or a large shelving unit can often create a more spacious feel than many small cupboards or fragmented storage solutions. This principle is also used in many hotels to create the impression of more space.

Bath or shower?

If you have the freedom to design the space yourself—including choosing fixtures—these tips may help: you can visually enlarge the bathroom by opting for a walk-in shower, i.e. a shower without a traditional enclosure. A cubicle or shower curtain can make the room feel darker and smaller.

If you do not want to give up a bathtub, consider installing a showerhead or hose as well. This provides a practical two-in-one solution and makes the most of the available space.

When it comes to other sanitary fixtures, it is important to maintain a sense of openness. Wall-mounted toilets and washbasins create a more spacious feel than floor-standing alternatives. Wall-hung cabinets are also an excellent way to create storage while saving space.

It is also worth considering modern, possibly multifunctional installations. Are there options specifically suited to your bathroom? And do you really need a traditional radiator, or would a heated towel rail that also functions as a towel holder be sufficient?

Creating storage space

Large storage units are not always possible in small bathrooms. If you prefer not to rely on wall cabinets or high shelving, mirrored cabinets and under-sink units can be a useful solution. These allow everyday items to be neatly stored away, keeping the bathroom tidy and uncluttered.

Perhaps your washing machine is also located in the bathroom? In this case, you can add shelving above it or install a structure to place the tumble dryer on top. This saves even more space while keeping both appliances accessible. Alternatively, you could relocate the washing machine and dryer to the kitchen or, if available, a utility room or storage area.

Accessories & décor

The smaller the bathroom, the less space there is for decoration. Even if you love decorative elements, you should avoid too many small items in a compact bathroom, as they can quickly make the space look cluttered. Instead, focus on a few statement pieces and add personal touches through stylish bathroom accessories and textiles.

Towels in particular can make a big difference, allowing you to introduce both bold colours and patterns in a targeted way. By using coordinated towels, bath mats and matching accessories, you can quickly create a harmonious and visually calm atmosphere.
