How often should you wash bed linen?

The feeling of freshly washed bed linen is unmatched, as we sweat every night and lose moisture and skin flakes. All of this naturally accumulates in the bedding, which is why the pleasant feeling of fresh bed linen feels so good not only on the body but also mentally.

Washing bed linen regularly and properly ensures hygiene – but how often is enough? Experts recommend changing bed linen every two to three weeks. However, if you sweat heavily at night, a weekly change may be advisable. The same applies to pet owners who share their bed with their animals. You should also wash and change bed linen after recovering from an illness.

At what temperature should bed linen be washed?

To ensure that not only dirt particles but also germs and bacteria are removed from bed linen, it should be washed at as high a temperature as possible. A temperature of 60°C is recommended and ideal for bed linen made of cotton, jersey, or flannel.

For bed linen made of linen or silk, you will likely need to reduce the temperature to 40°C or even 30°C to avoid damaging the material. In such cases, an additional hygiene rinse can help achieve the desired effect even at lower temperatures.

Which washing program is ideal for bed linen?

Bed linen can usually be washed in the washing machine as normal laundry. A special program is only required for very delicate materials; otherwise, a standard cycle for colored or boil wash is the right choice.

Delicate bed linen should also not be spun at too high a speed. It is better to reduce the spin speed to around 800 RPM, while sturdy cotton bed linen can easily withstand 1400 RPM.

Of course, you can wash bed linen together with your fitted sheets. As long as no color bleeding is expected and there is enough space in the machine, there is no issue.

Follow care instructions: know the material properties

The care label shows you at which temperature you can wash the bed linen, whether it can be spun, or if it is suitable for the tumble dryer.

Our bed linen from the MÖVE LUXURY and MÖVE NOBLESSE collections can be washed at 60°C thanks to high-quality cotton and can even be dried at low temperatures. Colorful patterned bed linen, on the other hand, should not exceed 40°C to keep its appearance for longer.

To prepare your bed linen properly for washing, turn it inside out to prevent colors from fading. Also, close any zippers so that other laundry items do not get caught.

It’s best to check before purchasing at which temperature the desired bed linen can be washed and dried. You will always find this information in our webshop under the “Care instructions” section.
