Special Features of Towels for Babies

When a new family member arrives in the world, it brings many changes. However, expectant parents nowadays are well prepared thanks to comprehensive lists of baby essentials. For the first bath – and all those that follow – a small baby towel is therefore already waiting. Of course, you can also dry your child with a “normal” towel, but especially with babies and toddlers there are a few points you should bear in mind when making your choice.

Safe Materials for Babies

We all want safe and harmless products, but the skin of babies and children is particularly sensitive. For textiles that come into direct contact with the skin, such as towels or bathrobes, you should make sure that they do not contain any harmful substances. As a layperson, this can sometimes be difficult, but fortunately there are labels you can rely on.

In the textile sector, this is the OEKO-TEX® label, which certifies not only the fabrics, but also buttons, yarns and other materials used. The limit values set by OEKO-TEX® are often stricter than legal requirements; however, there are different product classes. For baby textiles, you should always choose towels in Product Class 1: this is where the strictest requirements apply. In principle, companies can have their products certified up to Product Class 4 – but the requirements there are tailored to items that do not come into contact with the skin and are used only for furnishing purposes, such as curtains or table linen.

ALL textiles from MÖVE are manufactured to comply with Product Class 1. This means they are also ideally suited to allergy sufferers, people with sensitive skin, as well as babies and toddlers.

Sizes & Shapes

Bath towels for adults usually measure 80 x 150 cm. Towels of this size can easily be wrapped around the body and absorb plenty of water. For children or babies, however, this is not the right size – they would more or less be “lost” inside them. Babies and toddlers do not dry themselves yet in any case, and their bodies are much smaller. Particularly popular, therefore, are square hooded towels measuring 85 x 85 cm, though standard towels measuring 50 x 100 cm are also practical.

Small children love especially fluffy towels, so it is worth choosing a slightly thicker quality with a more voluminous feel.

Baby Towels with a Hood

We lose most heat through the head, and since most babies have little or no hair, hooded towels are a very good choice. This allows you to wrap your little one up warmly and cosily after a bath or a trip to the swimming pool and dry them off at leisure. Washing Children’s Towels Properly

Many towels can be washed at 30°C. However, bacteria may remain in the towel at this temperature and then multiply. So pay attention to the care instructions: textiles for children are often made of pure cotton, which can easily be washed at 60°C and therefore cleaned more thoroughly. Incidentally, this also means you do not need any special detergent, additional hygiene cleaner or other disinfecting products. You should also avoid fabric conditioner. While it makes towels pleasantly soft, it also reduces their absorbency. If you wish, you can put your child’s towel in the tumble dryer after washing. The fibres regain their loft better through the trapped air than if the towel is left to dry hanging on the line.
