Nocturnal sweating: why it’s uncomfortable

The ideal sleeping temperature is 18–20 degrees Celsius (source: Sleep Foundation)—in summer, this guideline is often exceeded in many bedrooms. When we sleep, our body temperature also drops. The cooler the environment, the easier it is for us to fall asleep and stay asleep. At particularly high ambient temperatures, the time spent in REM sleep can even decrease significantly. As a result, we feel less rested in the morning.

In addition, excessive sweating at night can lead to damp bedding or even wet marks on the sheets and an overall uncomfortable feeling. In this article, we therefore show you how important the right bedding is in summer, and what else you can do to sleep better in high temperatures.

Difference between summer and winter bedding

In summer, we want bedding that cools—while in winter, we want bedding that keeps us warm. What determines its function is both the material and the weave. Cotton, for example, can be processed in different ways to either provide good air circulation or a cozy, warm feel.

In addition to the bedding itself, it is also important that it is paired with the right duvet. There are different warmth levels here as well. You can learn more in this article: Summer duvet and winter duvet – these are the differences.

With our MÖVE NOBLESSE and MÖVE LUXURY collections, you are well equipped for both summer and winter.

Materials for summer bedding

In summer, you can expect pleasant nights especially with bedding made from the following materials:

• Cotton satin: tightly woven, elegant, and pleasantly cooling
• Seersucker: slightly textured surface for good air circulation
• Jersey: wrinkle-free and suitable for year-round use
• Percale: finely woven cotton, ideal for hot nights
• Renforcé: durable and long-lasting
• Silk: more demanding to care for, but very elegant and cooling

Proper care for summer bedding

Regardless of summer or winter: always pay attention to proper care of your bedding. Before purchasing, you can review important care instructions online, and you will also find everything you need to know about washing, drying, or ironing on the care label.

Especially in very hot summer temperatures, you can often skip the tumble dryer: drying laundry on a line in a light breeze is faster and more environmentally friendly.

Tip: how to achieve cooler nights

In Germany, air conditioning is still rather uncommon, and running it at night can also increase the risk of catching a cold (source: SRF). Many people also find fans too noisy at night. Therefore, proper ventilation is key.

When outdoor temperatures are high during the day, you should ensure that as little warm air as possible enters the bedroom. It is best to keep the room dark during the day and ventilate thoroughly in the evening, at night, or early in the morning when temperatures are lower.

Choosing the right bedding for summer

To find the right bedding for hot summer nights, there are several factors to consider. In addition to materials and color preferences, you may also care about sustainability. We share this value and work with reliable partners to provide consistently high standards.

For particularly warm nights, we recommend our MÖVE LUXURY bedding collection made of high-quality cotton satin with a beautiful double-face look. Our fitted sheets are also made of cotton satin and help support a comfortable sleep in summer.
