Fitted Sheets: Sizes, Care & Tips

What are fitted sheets?

Fitted sheets are bed sheets with sewn-in elastic edges and shaped corner seams. This ensures a snug fit compared to a conventional flat sheet and, thanks to the elastic, prevents it from slipping out of place. As a result, a fitted sheet contributes significantly to a comfortable and restful night’s sleep.

Fitted sheets are suitable all year round. Which material feels best at different temperatures is largely a matter of personal preference. However, cool, smooth fabrics are particularly well suited to the warmer months, while soft, cosy materials are ideal for autumn and winter.

What are the differences between fitted sheets?

Fitted sheets are available in a variety of sizes. As they are elasticated, they can (to a certain extent) be stretched to fit mattresses of different dimensions. At MÖVE, we offer the following sizes:

• 100 x 200 cm: Suitable for mattresses from 90 cm wide, i.e. single beds
• 160 x 200 cm: Suitable for mattresses from 140 cm wide
• 200 x 200 cm: Suitable for large mattresses with a width of 200 cm

There are also differences in materials: fitted sheets are available in jersey, linen, brushed cotton (flannel) or satin – even terry cloth with fine, single-sided loops can be used for bed sheets. MÖVE fitted sheets are made from the finest cotton sateen, which is densely woven and gentle on the skin. Sateen is smooth with an elegant sheen, giving your bed a refined appearance and providing the ideal base for your favourite bedding.

Which fitted sheets are suitable for deep mattresses?

An important factor in determining which mattresses a fitted sheet is suitable for is the depth (also known as the pocket depth). Taller mattresses, such as those used in box spring beds, require fitted sheets with a corresponding depth. Only then will the sheet fit securely without being overstretched. If the fitted sheet is not deep enough, it can be difficult or even impossible to fit properly and may easily come loose from the mattress or topper. With a pocket depth of 30 cm, all MÖVE fitted sheets are also ideal for deeper mattresses.

Fitted sheets are durable and can be stretched in both length and width when fitting them onto the mattress. Depending on the mattress size and the dimensions of the sheet, you may need to apply a little effort to ensure a smooth, wrinkle-free fit.

Caring for fitted sheets properly

Most fitted sheets can generally be washed at 60°C. This is important, as the sheet is in direct contact with your skin and the higher temperature ensures proper hygiene and cleanliness. They can also be tumble dried afterwards.

If you prefer to air dry your fitted sheet, it is advisable to pre-dry it briefly in the tumble dryer so that it dries more quickly on the line. However, always check the individual care label before washing and drying. This will ensure you can enjoy your fitted sheets for a long time – whatever the season.

You should change your bed sheets approximately every two to three weeks, including your duvet covers and pillowcases. This helps maintain a healthy sleeping environment and allows you to enjoy the feeling of a freshly made bed time and time again.
