Cleaning for body and mind

Some people prefer showering to bathing—while for others, a bath is an essential part of their wellness routine. Water is not only a means of cleansing the body; it can also help us relax and enhance our sense of wellbeing. But how exactly do baths and showers affect us? And is it true that showering is more environmentally friendly and healthier?

Finding relaxation in the bath

When bathing, we can sit or lie back and unwind in warm water. In this sense, bathing is far more than just “body cleansing” and can also provide relaxation and a sense of healing. Bath additives with essential oils may have a positive effect on the respiratory system or help relieve pain when combined with warm water. The soothing atmosphere of a bath can be further enhanced with scented candles or room fragrances.

A bath is also ideal for warming up after a winter outing or relaxing muscles after exercise. There are even additives that may help prevent muscle soreness.

Filling the bathtub can take around 10–20 minutes, and a bath only feels worthwhile if you spend more than 15 minutes in the water. If you do not have this time—or do not wish to take it—you may find that a shower offers more convenience and relaxation.

Advantages & disadvantages of showering

Even if you only have a shower or do not enjoy bathing, you do not have to miss out on relaxation: rainfall showers or massage shower heads can help create a soothing experience.

For many people, however, a warm or lukewarm shower is the best option when it comes to feeling truly clean. The flowing stream of water enhances this sensation more than a still bath. Especially after getting dirty—such as after physical activity or outdoor work—a shower is the quickest and most straightforward way to cleanse. Showers are also faster. If you are getting ready in the morning or want to wake up rather than relax, a shower is ideal.

Water consumption: showers often come out ahead

A quick shower uses less water than a full bath, which often has a capacity of around 150 litres. However, the longer the shower lasts, the more this water-saving advantage diminishes.

Frequency also plays a crucial role. Showering daily—perhaps even more than once—can result in higher water consumption than taking a bath twice a week. It is worth reflecting on your personal habits if you want to save water. Using water-saving shower heads with built-in flow restrictors is also recommended. These shower heads are usually smaller, meaning less water is used overall.

What is better: showering or bathing?

If you have both a shower and a bathtub, you can choose whichever suits the situation best. If you are still deciding what to install—and space does not allow for both—a shower is usually more cost-effective, both in terms of purchase and running costs. However, if you enjoy bathing, it is well worth investing in a bathtub. With the right shower curtain or screen, it can easily be converted into a shower as well.

Water always places some stress on the skin. Both water and products such as shower gel or shampoo can soften the skin, making its protective barrier more permeable—leading to a loss of natural oils and potentially causing dryness. If you are prone to dry skin, you should avoid using water that is too hot or spending too long in the shower or bath. With the right skincare products, however, your skin can cope well—and wrapped in a soft towel or comfortable bathrobe, the feeling of relaxation can last even longer.
