Jacquard towels: How the jacquard weaving technique works

Towels may be practical and should always fulfil their function – yet as a stylish and high-quality accessory in the bathroom, they should not be underestimated. The jacquard weaving technique creates decorative patterns that provide a distinctive look. In this article, we explain how it works and show you everything you need to know about jacquard towels and their special features.

What is jacquard?

Jacquard is a technical process that enables patterned textiles to be produced mechanically – a revolution for the textile industry. Previously, such patterns had to be created by hand. Jacquard fabric is therefore patterned and consists of different colours.

This weaving technique is named after Joseph-Marie Jacquard, a French weaver who invented the method in 1805. With jacquard terry fabrics, it is often the case that the reverse side is the negative of the front, meaning the pattern appears in inverted colours.

These patterns are commonly created using jacquard:

  • Floral motifs for a natural or playful atmosphere
  • Geometric shapes for a timeless design
  • Ornamental embellishments for a touch of luxury

Jacquard towels: available materials

As jacquard is a weaving technique, various materials can be used. For towels, this is typically cotton.

It offers several positive properties:

  • Easy to care for and simple to clean
  • Highly durable and therefore very long-lasting
  • Particularly absorbent
  • Natural fibre with low allergenic potential

The quality of the cotton used also has an impact on the material. High-quality cotton makes jacquard-woven towels particularly soft.

Advantages of jacquard fabric

Towelsmade using the jacquard weaving technique generally impress with striking contrasts and an excellent visual effect, which, however, cannot be felt to the touch. This means jacquard towels can be wonderfully soft, as the different colours do not create any variation in texture or feel. The impressive visual possibilities can be seen, for example, in our Möve ILLUSIONS collection.

The manufacturing technique also makes it possible to weave particularly fine and intricate designs. In addition, jacquard towels can be easily reversed and combined with plain towels – making them ideal for mixing and matching.

As the patterns are woven directly into the jacquard bath towel, they cannot – unlike a surface print – be washed out or fade. The design remains intact even after many washes and looks as good as new.

What should you look for when buying jacquard towels?

As with all terry products, you should primarily pay attention to the quality of the materials and high-quality workmanship. In this regard, terry towelling is always preferable to the cheaper terry, as its woven loops make it more durable.

You should also consider the material composition. 100% cotton is a good basis, but depending on the desired properties, a blend with linen or viscose may also be suitable.

Which colour scheme suits your bathroom or interior?

Also consider whether you can combine bath towels with large-scale patterns with plain towels to create a visual balance.

Overall, the jacquard technique allows for elegant, refined or striking designs – almost any style is possible. They are particularly characterised by colour contrast and the negative reverse side. Thanks to the special weaving technique, the patterns remain permanently intact and create a sophisticated ambience in your bathroom.
