Fresh Smells in the Bathroom: How to Make It Smell Pleasant (Again)!
A dirty bathroom does not smell good – that much is certain. But even clean bathrooms sometimes give off little more than the smell of cleaning products. If you then want to relax with a bubble bath, that very smell can be off-putting. With a few simple touches, however, you can create a feel-good oasis that smells pleasant all the time.
Evoking Feelings Through Scent
We experience the world through all our senses and store those experiences in our memory. When we later hear, taste or smell something, it can trigger emotions in us. Scents in particular influence our feelings in a very subtle way and often awaken memories of our first “fragrance experience”. That is why it is also highly individual whether we enjoy the smell of sandalwood, vanilla or mint. In addition, certain scent notes can affect our mood.
It is a good thing, then, that there are many ways to bring your own fragrance preferences into the bathroom. That way, you can feel at ease and decide for yourself whether you want to feel relaxed or refreshed after your shower.
Scents and their effects:
- Cinnamon: invigorating & uplifting
- Bergamot: calming & balancing
- Eucalyptus: refreshing
- Mint: refreshing & performance-enhancing
- Spruce and fir needles: stabilising
- Vanilla: calming & anxiety-relieving
- Lavender, rose and jasmine: anxiety-relieving, balancing & relaxing
- Lemon and lemongrass: refreshing & invigorating
- Orange and mandarin: mood-lifting & balancing
Warmth and Fragrance with Scented Candles
Candles in the bathroom create a cosy atmosphere and enhance any wellness day. But instead of simple tealights, you can choose a more fragrant alternative: scented candles look more attractive and, alongside a little warmth, also spread pleasant aromas.
How strongly a scent comes across also depends on the temperature. If a scented candle is placed on the windowsill above a radiator, the fragrance becomes more intense – even when it is not lit.
Gentle Fragrance with Reed Diffusers
A stylish and pleasantly scented bathroom can also be achieved through diffusion. A diffuser consists of a bottle filled with a fragrance mixture and wooden reeds. Essential oils provide the scent, while alcohol helps to disperse it. The alcohol evaporates through the inserted reeds. What remains is the fragrance, which can then spread through the air in the room. The more reeds are placed in the liquid, the stronger the scent becomes. This allows you to control for yourself how intense the room fragrance should be.
Aroma diffusers such as the room fragrances from MÖVE ESSENTIALS or MÖVE SIGNATURE work best in well-ventilated rooms, because a gentle airflow helps the scented air disperse more quickly.
Cleaning and Fragrance in One
Bars of soap also give off a light fragrance. They come in a wide range of scents that not only linger on the skin, but also remain in the bathroom afterwards. Expensive perfumed soaps often smell stronger and for longer, although they sometimes contain chemical fragrances that not everyone can tolerate.
Scented bath bombs work in a similar way: you can simply place them in a basket or a bowl in the bathroom, and the fragrance will spread throughout the room.
Perfumes & Natural Room Fragrances
If you are especially fond of a certain scent that is not available as a soap or room spray, you can also use a perfume or essential oils to envelop the bathroom in a gentle fragrance.
There are a few small tricks to make your bathroom smell like your favourite perfume:
- Spray perfume onto the inside of the toilet roll tube
- Apply perfume to a cotton wool ball and place it in a bowl
- Apply perfume to the light bulb
The same rule applies here as well: the warmer it gets, the more readily the scent will spread, and the more you ventilate, the more quickly even pleasant room fragrances will naturally fade.
If you prefer a more natural floral scent, you can place jasmine or lavender blossoms and rose petals in a bowl and create your own pot-pourri. This also works with other naturally fragrant items such as pine cones, apple slices or citrus peel.
Using Textiles to Carry Fragrance
Freshly washed towels and other bathroom textiles can also contribute to a particular scent in the bathroom. Perhaps you also especially like the smell of a certain fabric conditioner? Unfortunately, fabric conditioner is not particularly suitable for terry products. The light film it leaves on the fibres causes them to lose their absorbency.
A pleasantly scented detergent – used sparingly – will also remain in the towel and release a light fragrance in the bathroom.
It’s All About the Right Combination
If you want a particular scent in your bathroom, you should make sure to combine fragrance notes that are as similar as possible. Too many different smells can confuse the nose and prevent the desired effect. Some scents, although very pleasant on their own, also do not work well together. What smells good and works well for you is therefore something you should simply try out for yourself.
