Folding or rolling towels – how to do it properly
Folding towels: What you should keep in mind
Do you find it difficult to store your towels neatly in the cupboard, or do you feel uncomfortable when the—slightly imperfectly—folded towels are visible on the bathroom shelf? Today we’ll show you different ways to fold towels and whether (or when) it’s better to roll them instead.
Folding towels to save space
Whether you’re packing your suitcase for a vacation or simply want to use your cupboard space efficiently, there are several ways to fold towels to save space.
With the classic method of folding into quarters, towels often end up bulky and awkward. Stacks in the cupboard tend to lean to one side or even topple over.
This folding technique is simpler and more space-saving:
1. Lay the towel flat on the floor or another surface.
2. Fold the long side from the left toward the center, then the right side. Both ends should meet in the middle without overlapping, leaving a little space.
3. Fold the short side from the bottom up toward the center, then fold the upper short side down.
4. Fold the towel upward from the bottom to the center.
This method makes the towel more compact and helps it take up less space in your suitcase or linen cupboard. Another nice benefit: all edges are folded toward the center and therefore not visible from the outside.
Folding towels the Marie Kondo way
The Japanese organizing consultant Marie Kondo developed a method that is especially useful for tidying and decluttering. With her KonMari method, clothes and towels take up less space and are more visible: they are folded so that they can be stored upright in drawers or boxes and easily taken out. Instead of piles or stacks, you get a clear overview.
Unlike flat, space-saving folding, Marie Kondo’s method creates stable, compact “packages” that don’t tip over or get stuck in drawers.
Here’s how to fold towels the Marie Kondo way:
1. Lay the towel flat on the floor or a surface.
2. Fold the short sides together: fold the towel in half.
3. Fold the towel in half again from bottom to top.
4. Fold the now shorter sides from left to right toward the center.
5. Repeat this step to create a compact towel bundle.
Now the towel is neatly folded, stable, and compact, and can be easily stored in a drawer and taken out when needed.
Rolling towels: is it worth it?
If you choose to roll your towels, as is common in many hotels or spas, you can not only save space in your linen cupboard but also create an elegant look.
Here’s how to roll towels properly:
1. Lay the towel flat on the floor or a surface.
2. Fold the upper left corner toward the right so that a point is created on the top right.
3. Fold the left side over to the right, folding the towel lengthwise in the middle.
4. Carefully turn the towel over so the folds are underneath.
5. Roll the fabric from the wide bottom side upward toward the tip.
6. Tuck the tip into the towel to keep it from unrolling.
Rolled towels are not only great for storage but also look attractive in open shelves. They are especially practical when you expect guests or want to keep guest or hand towels in a visible basket or shelf.
Rolling is also useful when towels are frequently pulled from the bottom of a stack: with flat-folded towels, everything on top can shift and cause clutter. Rolled towels are easier to take out without disturbing the others.
Folding fluffy towels
These space-saving folding methods or rolling techniques are suitable not only for thinner towels, such as those from the MÖVE PIQUÉE collection, but also for especially fluffy towels like those from the MÖVE SUPERWUSCHEL range.
However, as with traditional stacking, fluffy towels take up more space even when folded efficiently than towels with shorter pile. Still, when folded correctly, they are easier to handle and will continue to look beautiful in your bathroom.
