Fitted sheets for box spring beds: What you need to consider
What distinguishes box spring beds from other beds
Box spring beds are built differently from the beds commonly used in Central Europe. The “American” bed does not consist of a frame with slatted base plus mattress, but instead is made up of a spring-loaded base with a fabric or leather cover (the box spring), a mattress, and a topper. In some cases, the mattress in a box spring bed is also permanently attached to the base, with only the topper placed on top. In this case, the entire bed must be replaced if the mattress no longer provides sufficient support after a few years.
A topper is a relatively thin layer placed on top of the mattress that protects it and, for example, creates a continuous, soft sleeping surface in a double bed.
Box spring beds are not only visually appealing, but due to their multiple components they are also typically higher than traditional beds. This makes getting in and out of bed easier, especially for older people.
Fitting a box spring bed
The challenge of fitting a box spring bed comes from the combination of mattress and topper. Depending on the type of box spring bed, only the topper may need to be fitted, or both the mattress and the topper. If both are covered, you can choose between separate sheets or a fitted sheet with a particularly high corner depth to cover the topper together with the mattress and prevent it from slipping.
Choosing sheets for the box spring bed
Of course, you can also choose flat sheets without elastic to make your box spring bed. However, this requires more effort and care. With a fitted sheet, you avoid the challenges of smoothing and tucking in the sheet and save time and effort.
How large should a fitted sheet for box spring beds be?
The mattress and topper also affect the size of the fitted sheet you should choose for your box spring bed: In terms of base dimensions, you orient yourself on the size of your sleeping surface, such as 160x200 cm or 200x200 cm—but the key factor is the corner depth.
The corner depth refers to the height of the mattress or topper. If you cover both mattress and topper together, this results in a higher value than when covering only the mattress. For a box spring bed, you should therefore choose fitted sheets with a high corner depth.
Tip: With a corner depth of 30 cm, our soft MÖVE fitted sheets in various colors are ideal for box spring beds.
Which fitted sheets are suitable for toppers?
If you want to cover the topper separately, you should use a sheet with a low corner depth, specifically designed for toppers. Other fitted sheets may otherwise slip.
Matching our fitted sheets, you will also find bedding sets and pillowcases in the MÖVE online shop—because box spring beds are perfect for outfitting with comfortable pillows in various colors and sizes.
