Duvet sizes are important for sleep comfort

Do you prefer to be completely covered by your duvet, or do you like your arms or feet sticking out? Do you share a duvet with your partner or prefer to have one for yourself? The right duvet size is crucial for getting a good night’s sleep. Today we’ll show you which duvet sizes exist and which ones are best suited for whom.

Standard size or oversized?

In Germany, we distinguish between different types of duvets:

• Standard size

• Comfort size (also: extra length)

• Extra width

At the same time, there is a difference between a duvet for one person and one for two people.

A standard duvet measures 135x200 cm. For single duvets, there are also variants with extra length (220 cm) and extra width (155 cm).

The table below gives you an overview of standard duvet sizes and their recommendations:

As a general rule, a length of 200 cm is sufficient for people up to 1.80 m tall. Taller individuals should opt for an oversized duvet with a length of 220 cm. If you have a broader build, a wider duvet can help you stay comfortably wrapped.

If one partner is significantly taller than the other, you should choose the longer version when sharing a duvet. Alternatively, you can use separate duvets. This is also advisable if one partner tends to pull the duvet at night or if you have different temperature preferences.

Special duvet sizes

In addition to standard duvet sizes, there are also special sizes for children or babies. Baby duvets measure 80x80 cm, while children’s duvets (also called junior duvets) measure 100x135 cm.

Depending on the manufacturer, duvets may slightly differ from standard sizes. These differences—such as 140x200 cm—can already cause issues with standard duvet covers, which are designed for standard sizes. Duvets that are too small or too large can lead to covers not fitting properly, causing the duvet to shift inside.

Matching duvet and mattress

The ideal duvet size also depends on your mattress. The wider the bed, the wider the duvet can be. Someone sleeping alone in a 140 cm wide bed will usually be fine with a 135x200 cm duvet. Wider beds can accommodate oversized duvets. Ultimately, personal preference always plays a role.

Duvet sizes abroad

In addition to the sizes commonly used in Germany, especially in holiday apartments or abroad, you may encounter American-size terms:

• Queen-size duvet: 234x234 cm

• King-size duvet: 260x220 cm

• Super King-size duvet (also: California King): 282x249 cm

However, these sizes are not strictly standardized, and in many countries, even double beds may come with only one duvet.

Finding the right bedding
