These trends will continue in bathrooms in 2023

A trend from recent years continues in bathrooms in 2023: black and matte surfaces and furniture are still popular and add elegant accents. This trend also continues for fixtures and even bathroom ceramics—these can now also be black.

Natural colors and materials also remain popular: wood was already one of the winners in bathroom design last year and continues to shine in 2023. Rustic designs with clearly visible grain patterns are gaining space, as are boho elements such as macramé.

Walk-in showers and freestanding bathtubs

The bathroom is no longer just a place where you quickly brush your teeth or take a shower. It is increasingly becoming a wellness oasis that is also visually appealing. This includes not only more spacious showers and bathtubs, but also larger bathroom spaces: many open areas and large windows give modern bathrooms in 2023 a loft-like feel; walk-in showers are separated from the rest of the bathroom by glass walls instead of doors.

Organic shapes remain essential, and minimalism is still an important theme: open spaces stay open and create a sense of size and openness—every corner does not need to be filled with rugs, furniture, or decorations.

Still, a comfortable armchair near a freestanding bathtub can add even more coziness, for example when applying a face mask or waiting for nail polish to dry.

Wellness in a home sauna

If you have enough space, you can dedicate part of it to a compact home sauna: a cozy place to relax and sweat is a must-have in a newly designed bathroom in 2023.

This can often be combined with a preference for natural colors and materials, as most built-in saunas are made of wood. Whether you prefer a seating area or multiple loungers, anything that suits your taste is possible.

The spa factor is further enhanced by the next trend:

Plaster instead of tiles

Traditional bathroom tiles are becoming less common. Instead, walls and floors are increasingly finished with a special lime plaster designed for wet areas, which can be tinted to your desired color by adding pigments. Even terrazzo, long out of fashion with its coarse stone elements, is making a comeback in bathrooms, covering large surfaces on both floors and walls.

If you still prefer tiles, large-format tiles are trending in 2023, often made of marble to further emphasize the luxurious feel of your bathroom. But even without this premium material, tiles are becoming larger and grout lines smaller.

Which colors should not be missing in bathrooms in 2023?

Green accents remain on trend this year as well. Dark shades are especially popular: dark green walls or plants create a connection to nature—and green tones in the bathroom have a calming effect. However, make sure there is enough natural light in the room.

If your bathroom has no windows or little light, you can still bring the trend color into the space through textiles: the shade Olive from our MÖVE BAMBOO LUXE collection fits perfectly into a modern bathroom, as does the rich light green from the MÖVE SUPERWUSCHEL series.

In contrast, terracotta is another trending bathroom color, as well as the bold shade Deep Lake.

Tips for small bathrooms

As is often the case, designers tend to use large spaces or extravagant furniture when introducing new trends, which are not always suitable for private homes. However, even if you have a small bathroom that cannot accommodate a freestanding bathtub or sauna, you can still take inspiration from these trends. You don’t need a full renovation to achieve a modern, attractive bathroom. With just a few elements, you can already create a great effect:

  • New bathroom textiles in trendy colors
  • Matching accessory series for a coordinated look
  • Adding accents with single colored walls
  • Incorporating green plants—ideally in a macramé hanging planter
  • Replacing cabinet fronts
  • Creating storage with attractive shelves and baskets
