A Feel-Good Day at the Sauna: What to Bring
What Should I Take to the Sauna?
Going to the sauna is pleasant and good for your health: the alternation between dry, hot air and cool water stimulates the metabolism and strengthens the immune system. Yet those who do not visit the sauna regularly in particular often feel unsure: what do I need to take to the sauna? And what can I leave behind?
You sweat in the sauna – and usually while naked. This is for hygienic reasons, because sweat in textiles such as swimsuits and bikinis can encourage the growth of bacteria. However, textile-free sauna bathing does not mean that you are completely unclothed throughout the spa.
A sauna session calls for a large towel, ideally a sauna towel. This means you are not sitting directly on the wood, and it absorbs sweat particularly well. If your chosen spa has a swimming pool, you can often use it in swimwear, so do remember that as well. You will then also need additional towels and ideally a bathrobe. That way, after cooling down refreshingly, you can wrap yourself up in warmth again.
Bath sandals or flip-flops also belong in your sauna bag. Added to this are the care products you need after your sauna session: shower gel, shampoo or body lotion, for example. In some sauna facilities, you may also consume food or drinks. If you want to relax, remember to bring a book for the breaks in between.
Kilts and Sarongs in the Sauna
A sauna towel protects the sauna from sweat and germs and helps you feel comfortable even when unclothed. Especially in mixed saunas, it also offers protection from perceived glances. A sauna towel is hygienic, but it does not always sit ideally on the body. If you want to prevent slipping in the sauna, you can also wear a special sauna kilt or sauna sarong.
The sauna kilt for men covers the lower body, reaches roughly to the knees and ensures that you can sit comfortably. The longer sauna sarong for women is pulled up above the chest. Both garments are often fitted with an elasticated section and can be fastened easily and conveniently with size-adjustable press studs. This ensures comfort and a secure fit.
Unlike a sauna towel, sauna sarongs or kilts also offer the advantage of pockets: this gives you a place to keep your locker key so that it does not get lost. Ideally, you combine the kilt or sarong with a sauna towel: that way, you have the full choice of how clothed or unclothed you would like to use the sauna.
